A Chinese archaic bronze vessel, FangleiWestern Zhou dynastyOf tapered baluster form, square section, on tall flared foot, with tall neck, a pair of animal mask and ring handles at the shoulder flanked by circular bosses, the front and back with additional masks flanked by bosses, an additional animal mask handle above the foot, archaic characters to the interior of the neck, mottled red and brown patina. H: 15 1/4 in.PROVENANCE:Michael Goedhuis, London Property from a Private Collection, Main Line, Philadelphia, acquired from the above, February 9, 1993 NOTE: For another example of a smaller fanglei and cover, dated to the late Shang/Early Western Zhou period, see the example sold at Christie's, New York, September 13-14, 2012, lot 1237. These works are both fairly plain in ornamentation, of similar overall form and with comparable mask and boss details..
