Glenna Goodacre (American, 1939-2020) Naiads (Two of the Four works), 1989 Bronze with green patina, each 96 inches (243.8 cm) high on a 5 inch (12.7 cm) high stone base (largest) Ed. of 15 Each inscribed on base: 1989 AP G Goodacre PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF GLENNA GOODACRE LITERATURE: G. Goodacre, Glenna Goodacre, Sculpture, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2009, pp. 53-55, illustrated. Glenna Goodacre's sculptures are coveted for their lively expression, texture, design and sense of movement. Her early career as a painter provided the foundation for her first bronzes, created in 1969. She has since sculpted over 600 different works, the most well-known of which is the Vietnam Women's Memorial, installed in Washington, D.C. on the National Mall in 1993. Her largest piece is the massive Irish Memorial, cast in 2002 for Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. Her smallest work is the obverse of the Sacagawea U.S. Dollar first minted in 2000. An academician of the National Academy of Design in New York and a fellow of the National Sculpture Society, Goodacre has won many awards at their respective exhibitions over the span of four decades. The artist received honorary doctorates from Colorado College, her alma mater, and from Texas Tech University in her hometown of Lubbock. 2009 marked her 40th anniversary as a sculptor with exhibitions and a 240-page hardcover book. Also in 2009, passionate Goodacre collectors gifted her only life-size marble figure The Bather to the prestigious Fred Jones, Jr. Museum at Oklahoma University in Norman. In 2010, for the 10th anniversary of the Sacagawea Dollar, Goodacre's studies and designs for the coin were added to the Smithsonian National Numismatic Collection in Washington, D.C. In 2013, Goodacre received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. In 2014 she was awarded the Legacy Award from The Texas Tech University Museum Association in Lubbock. Goodacre notes "Naiads and Water Spirits" are contemporary interpretations of the ancient Roman and Greek mythological nature goddesses in charge of the element of water. These beautiful maidens lived in all springs, rivers, lakes, and fountains, to give them spirit and life. I wanted to create figurative pieces which would work well with architecture or a water feature. Each bronze is a strong sculptural statement in itself, but as a group they are designed to complement each other with falling water or a jet of water. They also fit in a garden setting." In October, 2016, due to failing health, Goodacre announced her complete retirement from sculpting and casting bronzes. She destroyed her lost-wax foundry molds and gifted her clay, sculpture tools, art books, and studio equipment, along with four sculptures, to the New Mexico School For The Arts, a charter high school in Santa Fe where Goodacre has lived since 1983. Glenna Goodacre passed away on April 13, 2020 at the age of 80. Her jovial spirit will live on and bring joy to collectors through her lovely bronze creations.
