AN ACEH-STYLE GILT SILVER BELT AND BUCKLE
Indonesia, early 20th century
69 cm, the buckle 10 x 10 cm
Formed by thirteen plaques and a larger buckle, each piece richly chased and pierced with birds amidst flowers and foliage.
Provenance: the collection of a Dutch noblewoman lived in Indonesia, acquired before 1975.
This kind of belt was worn by Peranakan Chinese on Java and Straits Chinese women on particular occasion such as wedding. Its style is directly influenced by belts produced in south Aceh in the northern tip of Sumatra.
