Note: This 1948 work was completed in Paris after Zadkine’s return from American exile during World War II, at around the time Zadkine had received international acclaim. A large-scale retrospective exhibition would take place in Rotterdam in 1949 and following that his presentation of the Grand prix de Sculpture at the 1950 Venice Biennale. From 1946, he was teaching young artists from many countries at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Zadkine frequently mixed in La Ruche and worked alongside the avant-garde artists, Fernand Léger, Joseph Csaky and Alexander Archipenko. This piece is no.
