Béla Kádár, Hungarian 1877-1956, Abstract untitled, circa 1940; gouache on board, signed lower right, 60.5 x 43cm (ARR) Provenance: Piasa, Paris, 15 December 2006, lot 267; Sotheby's Amsterdam, 7 December 2005, lot 269; Private collection, London Note: In the 1920, Kádár became an artist of interest after he exhibited at the highly influential Galerie Der Sturm, Berlin at the invitation of Herwath Walden. During the group exhibition at Walden’s Gallery alongside the Der Sturm artists, Kádár met the American collector Katherine Dreier, who included his work in the 1926 and 1928 Brooklyn Museum's 'Société Anonyme' exhibition organised by Dreier and the artists Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp. Kádár became one of the most famous members of the early twentieth century Hungarian avant-garde. He notably employed aesthetics from a range of movements, such as Constructivism, Cubism, and German Expressionism, and focused on traditional Hungarian folklore to inspire his imagery. His works can be found in collections worldwide most prominently the Hungarian National Gallery. Please refer to department for condition report
