Niccolò Codazzi (Naples 1642-1693 Genoa) A capriccio of classical ruins with elegant figures promenading oil on canvas 95.4 x 128.2cm (37 9/16 x 50 1/2in). Footnotes: Provenance Sale, Christie's, London, 28 April 2006, lot 102, where purchased by the present owner David Marshall confirmed the attribution to Codazzi at the time of the last sale and suggested a date of circa 1680, the end of the artist's Roman period. He was in Rome between 1675 and 1681, living near the church of San Macuto. He was one of the artists who worked on the decoration of the piano nobile of the Palazzo Altieri at that time.
