原名桐生，后改单名桐，字琴木。琴材，桐木也。号冷枫居士，别号苍梧生。江苏吴江人。是20世纪画坛一位功力深厚的传统型画家，以山水见长，兼能花鸟、人物，其艺术道路，由师古人而师造化，由临仿而创作，由“四王”、吴恽上溯吴门画派、元四家 、赵孟頫、四僧、龚半千等，综合创造，自成一格。其作品，表现出对古代文人画艺术的深刻理解与把握，结构严谨，笔墨精纯而多变，风格温润秀雅。与同时代的吴湖帆、张大千、张石园等相仿佛，绘画能力亦在伯仲之间。
