A Japanese style sword with approximately wakizashi nagasa of 38.3cm and mounted in a 'buke zukuri-style koshirae' featuring floral designs on the ishizuke and other scabbard metalwork. The habaki numbered beside a circular motif similar to that of the Koishikawa Arsenal; the blade with both worn romanised inscription and worn armorial device. Overall length about 66.5 cm longThe Property of a Lady. From a Private UK. Collection.Similar hybrid edged weapons in the Japanese style are known. See for example 'Military Swords of Japan, 1868-1945' by Richard Fuller and Ron Gregory [1986] where on page 75 the authors discuss a Japanese style dagger that they attribute to the Armed Forces of The Guomindang. However, given the inscription and device on the blade here, a Chinese Nationalist origin or use seems unlikely. Areas of wear and deterioration to both blade and mounting.
