He painted historical events, boats, Maine scenes, portraits and did book illustrations.He was a nationally known portrait painter and did illustrations for a number of national magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post. During World War I he painted many posters for the war bond drives and in 1937 was awarded the Poor Richard Medal for outstanding achievement in the field of advertising art.
