A pair of late George III silver shaped circular vegetable dishes and covers by William Stroud, London 1812, the covers unmarked except standard marks to the handle nuts, with leaf-capped scroll detachable handles to the domes, moulded towards the bases with nulled borders, engraved with armorials, the dishes with shaped gadroon and shell rims, 29cm (11 1/2in) diameter, 3495g (112.35 oz) The arms of EARDLEY, baronets (né SMITH) to the covers, the crest of SMITH to the bases. Sir Culling Smith, 2nd Baronet (1768-1829), was of Huguenot extraction and his mother, Charlotte Elizabeth (died 1826) was the daughter of Sampson Eardley, 1st Baron Eardley. She was heiress to much of the Eardley estate. His son Sir Culling Eardley Eardley, 3rd Baronet (né Smith; 1805-1863) was a Christian campaigner for religious freedom and for the Protestant cause, one of the founders of the Evangelical Alliance.
