Phyllis Bray LG, British 1911-1991- Two kingfishers darting over Kenwood Lake, Hampstead, c.1950s; oil on canvas, signed, 60.5x91.7cm., (unframed) (ARR) Note: Bray was born in Norwood and was an artist and illustrator best known for her involvement in the East London Group and for illustrating children's books. She obtained a scholarship to study at the Slade School of Art from 1927-1931 where her tutor was Henry Tonks. She was elected to the London Group in 1933 and married her first husband artist John Cooper. Bray worked alongside Hans Feibusch on mural paintings in churches across Britain. She also did worked for London Transport. The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, The Blackpool Art Gallery, Burgh House, Hampstead Museum and the UK Government Art Collection hold examples of her work.
