2nd-3rd century AD. A ceramic oil lamp with short D-shaped nozzle, textured upper face with raised rim to discus, lug handle to the rear. 90 grams, 10.2cm (4"). Ex Dudley Collings collection, thence by descent; formerly in 'The Swansea collection'; found in Alexandria, Egypt, in the 19th century. Dr Dudley Willis Collings (1870-1955) was the first curator of the Southwold Museum and the town's doctor. Collings' son and daughter-in-law were close friends of Eric Blair (George Orwell) who shared their interest in anthropology. [No Reserve]
