2nd-3rd century AD. A hollow-from bronze figurine of Telesphorus shown standing in a hooded cloak, arms extended. 28.2 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; acquired 1970-1980. Telesphorus (??????????) was a son of the Greek god of medicine, Asklepios. He was associated with convalescence and recovery from illness, accompanied by his sister, Hygieia. Telesphorus was represented as a dwarf, his head covered with a cowl. Representations of the god are found mainly in Anatolia and along the Danube, implying a Central European origin for the cult which spread to Anatolia with the Galatians in the 3rd century BC with a centre at Pergamon. With the rise of the Roman Empire during the 2nd century AD, knowledge of Telesphorus spread across western Europe.
