Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1st-4th century AD. A knife composed of a single-edged iron blade and handle, oval in section, formed as an eagle standing atop an architectural column, similar to the Roman Doric style; the eagle looks straight ahead, wings closed and held tight to its body, feet together, shallow scalloped and v-shaped patterns suggest soft, feathery detailing to its chest, head and neck, while deeper, purposeful linear details announce its powerful wings. 90 grams, 18.5cm (7 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired on the UK art market since 2011; previously in English collections since before 2000.
