Ming Dynasty. 16th c.|Bronze with dark patina and a darkened lacquer gilding. Seated in padmâsana on a lotus throne, his hands held in dhyana mudrâ. He is clothed with jewelry and elegant robes. At his shoulders to the right a patra-bowl and at the left a book on the stalks of lotus that he is holding in his hands.| |The finely crafted and highly detailed bronze still shows some of the original lacquer gilding that is mostly darkened. At some places the lacquer coat flaked off, so that the gold is showing its fresh shine. Height 25.5 cm. Condition A/B.|Provenance:|Collection of Willy Nebgen (c.1880-1917), -Private collection Rhineland. |Willy Nebgen was a member of the imperial marine. In the year 1900 he was sent to China as a soldier, to fight in the allied forces to defeat the Boxer Rebellion. On site he was dangerously wounded and could only return to the forces one year later. During his stay he got to know chinese art. Enthusiastic he bought some pieces, such as the now offered Bodhisattva. 1917 Nebgen died during an operation on the minehunter Bismarck I, when the minehunter ran onto ground, due to a mine. His collection of chinese artwork was handed on to his family and still exists in parts until today.
