用松花石制砚始于明代末年，推重于清朝，康熙、雍正、乾隆等帝对松花石砚都十分欣赏，康熙帝还封它为“御砚”，一直专供宫廷使用。用松花石加工成松花砚，最早出现在明朝中期，但存世量很少。到了满清入关问鼎天下，松花砚因其特殊的历史渊源得以青睐，成为清朝皇帝的御用物品。但正是由于皇家的专宠，而没有能够把这一上品的砚石发展起，来成为民间普及的文房用具。
