SHIVA AND PARVATI WITH FAMILY Bronze North India , 11th to 12th century , Pala Dynasty Dimensions: Height 16 cm by 11 cm Weight: 1023,6 grams The circular base is set off with beaded rims and double reverse lotus flowers. There are three different levels with various groups of the family. On the very bottom attached are two platforms with a mouse, presenting Ganesha's mount and a bird possibly standing for Garuda. The next level is built by two lotus flowers attached to the centre and on each of them sit Shiva's sons, Ganesha to the left and Kartikeya to the right. Both are seated in royal ease pose in their respective manner. In the centre of this level are two tiny lotus flowers supporting a small bull, Nandi, Shiva's mount, and a lion. The biggest element of this piece are Shiva and his wife Parvati sitting on his right knee. Shiva has four arms holding lotus flowers and one arm wrapped around her while she is forming the abhaya mudra with one hand while holding onto his back. Both are wearing jewellery and headdresses with decorations. This is truly detailed family portrait.
