HUGE HONGSHAN JADE DEPICTING PIG-DRAGON Jade China Dimensions: Height 12 cm by 8 cm Weight: 444,3 grams The jade is of green-yellowish colour and carved in the shape of a mythical animal referred to as pig-dragon or seldomly as bear-dragon. The shape is zoomorphic with pig-like head and limbless body coiled around to the head and resembles an embryo. Hongshan was the place where the artefacts from this culture were first discovered. The people were dependent on agriculture and therefor fertility was of importance to them. The dragon, being a deity bringing rain to the earth, perfectly combined with the important livestock pig. Jades like this were important burial artifacts and are generally found in this pig-dragon shape or c-shaped dragon.
