AN ARMILLARY SPHERE ( XUAN JI ) JADE Jade China, Western Zhou Dynasty Dimensions: Height 7 cm by 7 cm Weight: 61 grams The Xuan Ji describes the shape of the jade in a flat disk similar to a bi-disc, except that the outer edge has serrations like a circular saw. This jade only has three teeth on the outer edge and the hole in the centre is small. It has been suggested that those jades were used as astronomical instruments to locate stars.
