释迦牟尼佛，本是古印度迦毗罗卫国（今尼泊尔境内）的太子，属剎帝力种姓。父为净饭王，母为摩耶夫人，佛为太子时名叫“乔达摩·悉达多”，意为“一切义成就者”（旧译“义成”）。后苦修成佛，释迦牟尼的意思是“能仁”、“能儒”、“能忍”、“能寂”等，因父为释迦族，成道后被尊称为释迦牟尼，义即“释迦族的圣人”。
此像以精铜熔铸而成，呈坐姿。螺发规整，脸庞丰实，五官端正匀停，面相饱满丰润，长耳垂肩，宽额弯眉，神情静穆柔和，笑意中透露着慈祥。佛像体态端正，衣褶脉脉如行云流水，流畅自然，写实而富于变化。其双手拢于腹前作禅定印，双腿结跏趺坐，神态端庄。下承大仰莲瓣台座，工艺亦极为精湛。此尊佛像整体造型端庄，比例匀称，肢体丰满圆润。
