元末社会动荡不安，各地农民起义不断发生，先后出现了几派割据势力，纷纷鼓铸发行自己的货币，出现了中国历史上绝无仅有的，多种农民起义货币，同时出现的局面。
元朝至正十五年（1355年），元末红巾军领袖韩林儿在刘福通的扶持下登基为帝，自称小明王，以亳州(今安徽亳州)为都，建国号大宋，年号龙凤，并铸龙凤通宝钱。面文楷书“龙凤通宝”，由上而下、而右而左直读，“龙字末笔短缺，”“凤”字下有一小点，字体端庄，钱背光而无文。铜赤如金，钱体浑朴，文字遒劲优美，面值有小平、折二、折三。龙凤通宝存世比较罕见，为泉界藏家所喜爱，有着高昂的市场价值，是藏家们相互争抢的热门品种。
