如意一词出自印度梵语，是由印度传入我国的佛具之一，供法师讲经论经文于上以防遗忘。另据清《事物异名录》记载，“如意者，古之爪杖也”。我国古代有“搔杖”，又有记事于上的“笏”，如意兼二者之用。随之时间的推移其形态发生变化，一方面保留搔杖功能，流传在民间；另一方面强调吉祥含义，演化为纯粹的陈设珍玩，就是我们今日所见的如意。
