Jean-François VAN DAEL (Antwerp 1764-Paris 1840 and his workshop): "Marble vase with white roses and auriculae, narcissus and peonies on a grey marble entablature", round ivory miniature signed with the monogram, circa 1788. Set on a brown tortoiseshell box, probably with a gold rim. Diam. of the miniature 7.5 cm.
Former expertise of Olivier BORÉ.
Bibliography : Jean-François VAN DAEL, one of the best painters of flowers in miniatures, successively supplier of the Emperor Napoleon I, Josephine and Louis XVIII, also participated with his friend Christian Van POL to the decorations of the castles of Bellevue, Chantilly and Saint Cloud.
We compare our flower vase, probably one of the most beautiful miniatures delivered by the artist, with the two copies kept in the Fitzwilliam Museum (P.D. 1048-1973 and 1062-1973), as well as in the Félix Panhard collection (sale in Paris on 5 December 1975, cat. N° 141). Among the abundant bibliography devoted to the artist, one can consult the works of Schidlof, "la miniature en Europe", (T. 1 p. 185-186), Lemberger, Lespinasse and Lemoine-Bouchard (p. 512).
