Lots 80-90 The D M Jacobs Collection D M Jacobs (1930-2020) was a meticulous collector from a young age. After attending Oxford University, he travelled through the East in the 1950s, eventually becoming an English language newsreader on broadcast radio in Israel. Returning back home he was involved with the Anglo-Jewish Society. He was also a Blue Badge Guide in London and an expert on William Morris, providing talks and lectures. A collection of Chinese pottery, Tang dynasty (618-907), comprising: a large bowl, of conical shape with five spur marks to the interior, under a degraded pale glaze, with a 'BLUETT & SONS LONDON' label, 17.5cm diameter, a white glazed dish, the well-potted shallow well on a tapering circular foot, the everted rim divided into five lobes, with a 'Newton 327' label, 13cm diameter, a small vase, of ovoid form with four lobes on a tapering foot, with an everted mouth, all under a celadon glaze, with a 'BLUETT & SONS LONDON' label and a 'Newton 222' label, 8.5cm high, a water well, of globular form with an incised ring around the mouth, under a green translucent glaze, with a 'Newton 289' label, 4.5cm diameter, and a small ewer, Six dynasties (220-589), of lobed form with a short straight octagonal spout, a handle in the form of a chicken's tail and an appliqué on each side of the body to represent wings, covered in a brown glaze, with a 'Newton 99' label, 7cm high, three associated wood stands (8) Provenance: Dr Isaac Newton (excluding the white bowl); Bluett & Sons, Ltd.; D M Jacobs collection, purchased from Bluett & Sons Ltd. on 28 April and 3 May 1961 for a total of £26. It was a family belief that Dr Isaac Newton was a descendant of the great British scientist of the same name. He was a director of Medical Services in Hong Kong while he built up his interest in Chinese jades and early ceramics. His main collection was sold by Bluetts in 1981, in their exhibition of 'Dr Newton's Zoo: A Study of Post-Archaic Small Jade Carvings'. 唐 陶器 一组五件 Condition report: Bowl - chipped to rim and foot rim. Repaired. Not mentioned in the Bluett receipt. Lobed dish - chipped to foot rim. Small chips to rim. Vase - chipped to rim and foot rim, a section of foot damaged but present with the lot. Water well - glaze flakes. Chicken ewer - glaze flakes revealing the pottery body, chipped in various places. One wood stand chipped.
