The piece was donated by Mrs Sheriff of Ascreavie whose late husband was Major George Sheriff, Scottish Explorer and plant collector. They had spent many years in Tibet and Bhutan and he was the British Vice Consul in Kashgar. Mrs Sheriff described the robe as "Hand made in Kashgar in 1930 and was used by Christian Chinese at church festivities."
