The Sienese Bartolomeo Neroni (also known as "Il Riccio") was a versatile architect, sculptor, illustrator and painter and was active in the first half of the 16th century. After receiving his training in the Sodoma workshop, he followed the mannerism of Domenico Beccafumi. In the present painting, painted on wood, which was probably part of an extensive decoration, Riccio combines with irony and skill his preference for motifs from antiquity (playing putti, sea monsters and shells) with the gentle painting style of Sodoma and the works of the classical painters. Provenienz: Privatbesitz, Italien. Der Sieneser Bartolomeo Neroni (auch "Il Riccio" genannt) war ein vielseitiger Architekt, Bildhauer, Buchmaler und Maler und tätig in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Nachdem er die Ausbildung in der Werkstatt von Sodoma erhielt, folgte er stilistisch dem Manierismus des Domenico Beccafumi. In dem vorliegenden Gemälde, gemalt auf Holz, das wahrscheinlich Teil einer umfänglichen Dekoration war, vereint Riccio mit Ironie und Bravur die Vorliebe für Motive aus der Antike (spielende Putten, Seeungeheuern und Muscheln) mit dem sanften Malstil von Sodoma und den Werken der klassischen Maler.
