This is a monotype titled "Green Cross" by Cestmir Kafka. It is signed in the lower middle. Gallery label verso from the Jacques Baruch Gallery.After studying at a real grammar school in Jihlava and a high school diploma in Prostejov, he studied at the Bata School of Art in Zlín in 1940-45. In 1942-43 he had to interrupt his studies and was forcibly deployed in Styria. His close friend was the painter Václav Chad , who was arrested by the Gestapo at the end of the war for resistance activities and died tragically. Another personality of war Zlín with whom he was in association was the painter Milada Schmidtová. In 1946, Kafka was accepted to study at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in the studio of Professor Emil Filla . Here he became acquainted in detail with cubism, constructivism and Malevich's suprematism, and spent his free time studying literature and creating his own work. During his studies, he met the graphic artist Olga Cechová , who later became his wife. Their son Ivan Kafka is an artist.After graduating in 1949, Cestmír Kafka was described as a formalist and Trotskyist and expelled from public service.
