这件《秋山赏菊图山子》是中国工艺美术大师薛春梅的早期作品，富有典型的时代特色，从整体打磨抛光来看，在2000年左右，扬州的玉雕山子多对玉皮毛孔进行打磨抛光，这件即是如此，保留了和田玉灿然洒金皮及聚红皮色，薛春梅从料形及皮色出发，随形施艺，将灿然洒金皮色雕琢为菊花及秋山，并以镂空雕技法在正反两面皆雕琢为高士赏菊图，构图舒朗有致，富有画意，同时也具有一定的稀缺性和时代特征。
