此件取上好和田籽料制成，玉质细腻润泽，柔光内蕴，玉肉莹白似雪，浑无杂质。圆雕一隻甪端，身似麒麟，头顶独角，口衔灵芝，形态丰硕饱满，线条流畅自然，以便把玩。《宋书·符瑞志下》记：“甪端日行万八千里，又晓四夷之语，圣主在位，明达方外幽远，则奉书而至”。太和殿宝座前就有一对甪端护卫在侧，皇帝身在宝座而晓天下之事，做到四海来朝，八方归顺，护佑天下太平，视为吉祥瑞兽。
