漆砂作砚汉代便已有之，宋以后失传，直至清嘉道，卢葵生重拾技艺，将漆砂工艺发扬光大，所作漆砂砚更是其技艺之最高体现。顾千里所著《漆砂砚记》中赞卢氏漆砚：“有发墨之乐，无杀笔之苦，庶与彼二上品（端砚、澄泥砚）媲美矣！曾有，漆砂砚以扬州卢葵生家所制为最精……凡文玩诸事，无不以漆砂为之。制造既良，雕刻山水花鸟之文，悉臻妍巧”。砚式“玉兔朝元”，仿自宋代歙石“玉兔朝元”之砚，为乾隆帝最喜仿制的六种古砚式之一（其余为仿唐八棱澄泥砚、仿宋天成风字砚、仿汉石渠阁瓦砚、仿汉未央砖砚和仿宋德寿殿犀文砚）。砚为圆形，紫褐色。砚面起线，无墨池。砚背模印“玉兔朝元”图：即一只卧兔回首相望，一丸白日高悬空中。砚外配有原装紫檀砚盒，盒与砚配合妥贴；盖上中心嵌有玉兔，刻画生动，呼应主题。
