石湾窑始于唐宋，盛于明清，以陶塑和建筑陶瓷闻名于世，以擅仿钧窑而著称，然钧窑的窑变是一层釉色，而石湾窑变釉却有底釉和面釉之分。清人陈浏，又号寂园叟，其在《匋雅》一书中曾有言：“广窑谓之泥钧，其蓝色甚似灰色，于灰釉中旋涡周遭，故露异彩，较之雨过天晴尤极浓艳，目为云斑霞片不足以方厥体态，又有时于灰釉中露出深蓝色之星点，亦足玩也。”本件弥勒造像，开脸端庄慈祥，两耳垂于肩上，袒胸露乳，笑容可掬，一手扶于山石之上，另一手搭在膝上，衣纹刻画生动流畅自然。弥勒佛又称弥勒菩萨摩诃萨，是释迦摩尼佛的继任者，亦为未来佛，在佛教作为表法教育，表示“福大量大”提醒世人学习包容，其大肚能容，容天下难容之事，开口便笑，笑世间可笑之人。
