高架家具尚未传入之时，古人多席地而坐，《诗经》中就曾写道：“我心匪席，不可卷也”，从侧面反映了当时人们席地而坐的生活习惯。 古人所坐之席常为长方、正方形状，为压住四角，防止席子卷边、移动，席镇也因此应运而生。《广雅·释诂》记：“镇，重也。”席镇以动物造型最为多见，姿态通常作蜷屈，蟠伏状，底部平坦，自身保持一定重量，便于镇压。 本品便为席镇之佳例，以精铜熔铸，入手沉重，作天鸡栖歇之态，体态丰腴饱满，颈部粗韧有力，圆眼尖喙，翼翅微张，尾羽下垂散开，逶迤于地，形成优美的弧线。通体鎏金，金水虽略显斑驳，但依然银黄锃亮，附着力极佳。 整器造型设计巧妙，动态优雅写实，惟妙惟肖，线条圆润而富有张力，成对保存，实为难得。
