1450-1550 AD. A candlestick with hollow-formed hexagonal-section cup with flared collar and voided mounting ring; cast using a two-piece mould; two faces with a round piercing above a rectangular piercing, echoing Gothic style windows and formed here with characterful asymmetry; rich patina of contrasting light and dark colours; original tool marks visible; mounted on a custom-made wooden display stand which gestures towards the original base, lost in antiquity. Cf. Leahy, K. & Lewis, M., Finds Identified, Greenlight Publishing, 2018, p.155, for a similar candlestick; cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme Database for numerous examples, including find number WMID-4BDA01, most of which are far less well-preserved that the candlestick offered here.69 grams total, 75mm including stand (3"). Property of lady from Northern Ireland; part of her husband’s collection since 2000; formerly in his brother’s collection since the 1980s to early 1990s; found whilst ‘mudlarking’ on the Thames foreshore. The form of this candlestick echoes the earlier Gothic style, while the piercings suggest a Dutch or a Flemish influence, as manufacturers of candlesticks in England were not usually in favour of using openings to assist in the removal of candlewax from the sconce at this time.
