14th century AD. A silver octagonal finger ring with rectangular plaque, intaglio starburst and 'C' or crescent motif. Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, item 577, for type.4.95 grams, 24.27mm overall, 18.60mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q, USA 8, Europe 17.49, Japan 16) (1"). The property of an UK collector; acquired in the early 1990s. The 'star and crescent' motif was used in heraldry in medieval Europe where it was interpreted as a 'sun and moon' emblem. It has antecedents in Byzantine Christian iconography. It was adopted by the Mughal and Ottoman Empires in the 15th-16th century AD. [No Reserve]
