13th-14th century AD. A flat-section quatrefoil-shaped horse harness pendant presenting a bird of prey standing left on a falconer's gloved hand in high-relief, jesses extending below, foliage in the field in lower-relief, all within a raised border; integral suspension lug; possibly heraldic. Cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme Database, KENT2768 and HAMP-9DCC87, for comparable items.5.69 grams, 29mm (1"). Found near St Osyth, Essex, UK. The falcon or hawk is found as a heraldic bearing as early as the reign of King Edward II (1307-1327) of England. In heraldry, the falcon is indistinguishable from the sparrow-hawk, goshawk, kite, or merlin, though they may be described that way in blazon. [No Reserve]
