A bronze disc brooch with circular bands, four small cells containing black glass cabochons, central cell with large blue cabochon; traces of gilding to the central cell; pin, pin-lug and catchplate to the reverse. See Heeren, S. & Van der Feijst, L., Fibulae, uit de Lage Landen (Brooches from the Low countries), Ameersfort, 2017, p.470, NL-0446-04, for similar.42.1 grams, 46mm (1 3/4"). Property of a private New York collection; formerly in a UK private collection, since the 1980s. The fibula belongs to Type 60 of the Heeren and Van der Feijst category. Usually this was a multi-piece fibula with pin arrangement consisting of a single eye coil, needle and needle holder, all placed under a flat disc; the disc was made of different shapes, onto which an appliqué in the shape of a glass stone or Pressblech was rivetted or glued. It was used by both military and civil personnel for fastening the cloak on the right or left side of the body.
