54-71 AD. A moulded terracotta lamp, filling-hole left off centre, air hole at top of round-tipped volute nozzle, bearded Ulysses wearing pointed cap and tunic on the discus, holding out his right hand, half kneeling, gabled building behind; base marked by a circular groove. See Bussière, J., Lindros Wohl, B., Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 2017, type 213, p.146, for comparison.44.5 grams, 98mm (4"). Property of a West Essex gentleman; formerly in a 1980s private collection. A lamp of Loeschcke form VI a or Bailey type B group iii, produced by a laboratory active in Southern Anatolia from Neronian to Flavian period, according to Bailey. The discus decors are usually related to mythology. Here the representation is linked with the myth of Ulysses returning home (Ithaca) disguised as a beggar.
