3rd-4th century AD. A thick silver discoid mount with christogram cross within wreath to one face; pin with two flat faces at the top. See Lusuardi, S.S., Perassi, C., Facchinetti, G. & Bianchi, B., 'Gli elmi tardo-antichi (IV-VI sec.) alla luce delle fonti letterarie, numismatiche ed archeologiche: alcune considerazioni' in Buora, M., Miles Romanus, Dal Po al Danubio nel Tardoantico, Pordenone, 2002, pp.21–62.17.5 grams, 29mm (1"). From a private Buckinghamshire, UK, collection; acquired before 2000. This silver applique can be interpreted in many ways, although the crude workmanship of the Chi-Rho tracing and the laurel crown around it, can point to a military use. One possibility is that the round mount was a helmet applique: round helmet appliques with the Christian symbol, although of different shape, have been found on late Roman helmets since the second half of the 4th century AD (Lusuardi, Perassi, Facchinetti, Bianchi, 2002, p.53"). Another possibility is that the mount was reserved to Liturgical or domestic objects, like caskets, vessels, etc. [No Reserve]
