1st-3rd century AD. A silver lunar pendant with lozenge-section tapering body and ribbed tubular suspension loop, series of applied beads below. 9.63 grams, 40mm (1 1/2"). From the collection of a Surrey gentleman; acquired 1970-1980. A lunar pendant was worn by girls in ancient Rome as an apotropaic amulet to protect them against evil forces. The equivalent pendant for boys was the bulla.
