6th-7th century AD. A slender bronze finger ring with discoid bezel, low-relief image of a horseman in a landscape. Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, item 459, for type; cf. Wamser, L., Die Welt von Byzanz - Europas Östliches Erbe, München, 2004, p.329 nn.650-651, for type.1.21 grams, 21.24mm overall, 19.36mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q, USA 8, Europe 17.49, Japan 16) (1"). From a Dutch private collection; formerly in a European collection, acquired before 1980. The ring belongs to a typology widely spread in the Eastern Mediterranean area, often showing the image of a military saint on the bezel. During the 6th-7th century, the image of the saint cavalrymen represented mainly Saint Sisinnios, killer of the dragon, or Saint George or even Saint Theodoros, all patrons of the Roman army.
