3rd-2nd millennium BC. A group of four cylinder seals comprising three limestone and one jasper, each accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a copy of a typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder Seal of Fawn Stone. 29 x 10 mm. The design shows a standing horned animal with cross over the back and plant as a terminal. This is a seal in the Sumerian Jemdet Nasr tradition, c.3000 B.C., from Mesopotamia or south-west Iran. It is in good condition and a good example of its kind.'; one limestone with procession of animals and stamp to base, note states: 'Stamp-Cylinder Seal of Cream Stone 22 x 11 mm. The top of this seal with the loop is missing. On the base there is a depiction of a bird alighting. Around the sides there is a frieze of two walking horned animals with items in the background. This comes from west Central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The surface is a little abraded, but the design is clear.'; a marble seal with scene of lions attacking quadrupeds, note states: 'Cylinder Seal of Yellow Marble 18 x 9 mm. A contest scene of four animals on their hind legs is shown. In the middle are two horned animals turning their heads backwards to face each an attacking lion. This is an Akkadian seal from Mesopotamia or south-west Iran, c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is cut in a simple style, but is in a very good state of preservation.'; one limestone with opposed ibexes, note states: 'Cylinder Seal of Cream Stone 20 x 10 mm. The design consists of two walking, facing horned animals each with a scorpion above its back, so placed that they face each other. This is a seal in the Jemdet Nasr style, c. 3000 B.C. from Mesopotamia or south-west Iran. The stone is worn, but the scorpions are rare in such a design.' 13 grams total, 18-30mm (3/4 - 1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item numbers T-141, V-828, V-958, W-115; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; accompanied by four copies of typed and signed scholarly notes by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert.[4]
