Mainly 1st millennium BC. A mixed group of four cylinder seals comprising three limestone and one jasper; one accompanied by a museum-quality impression and typed and signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder Seal of Fawn Stone 24 x 10 mm. The design, which is put between upper and lower rulings, shows a sphynx (human female head, body of a lion with wings) confronting a monstrous bird of prey. There is a lunar crescent and star (symbol of Venus) in the sky. This seal is in the so-called Neo-Assyrian linear style and dates to c. 900-700 B.C. It was a fine seal of its type but the surface is now corroded. Close parallels from north west Iran suggest that area as its place of origin.' 22 grams total, 17-24mm (3/4 - 1"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; item numbers 45-B (20), T-218, T-533, W-344; academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s; accompanied by one original typed and signed scholarly note by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert.[4]
