English School, 1862 , "Portrait of a Young Cricket Player", oil on canvas, signed "S. West" and dated lower left, handwritten illegible label and "London" stamp on stretcher, 56 in. x 43 7/8 in., framed Provenance: Watersmeet, Nashville; Estate of Julia Evans Reed.Note: A painting which took pride of place in a number of Julia Reed’s homes, this monumental English School portrait first hung in the Nashville home of Julia Reed’s great-grandmother for many years…“I don’t think anybody ever paid attention to it, and I always lucky enough to have the highest ceilings, so it got passed to me. I can’t imagine what possessed her to buy that—it’s certainly not an ancestor—but I’m happy to have it. I don’t think anybody in my family even knew that was a cricket bat in the child’s hand until I made the mistake of going out with a cricket player, and so the mystery was solved.” ~ Julia Reed Ref.: Walsh, Julia Millay. “Tour Author Julia Reed’s New Orleans Home.” One Kings Lane. https://www.onekingslane.com/live-love-home/julia-reed-new-orleans-home-tour/.
