Note: Born in Philadelphia, Stanley Sporny attended the Philadelphia College of Art and the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied under noted artists such as Red Grooms, Alex Katz and Elaine de Kooning. During the summer of 1972, he was sponsored by Katz to attend the prestigious Skowhegan School in Maine. He then received an Albright Scholarship to study in Sri Lanka from 1972 to 1975. Sporny taught at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge from 1987 to 1988 before becoming a beloved educator at West Virginia’s Marshall University for the remainder of his lifetime. Sporny exhibited widely during his career, and his works can be found in important public collections such as the National Museum of American Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. The large-scale Mardi Gras themed works offered here exemplify Sporny’s bold and lively style, perfectly capturing the over-the-top spirit and mischievousness of Carnival.
