Dame Elisabeth Frink (British, 1930-1993) , "Wounded Horse", 1987, gouache and charcoal on paper, signed and dated twice lower right, printed label with title and date and "John James LTD" label on backing, 39 7/16 in. x 27 13/16., framed. Note: Elisabeth Frink had a lifelong fascination with horses stemming from her country childhood in Sussex, England. Her father was a skilled horseman and an amateur jockey, which augmented an enthusiasm that continued throughout her life as she explored the form of the horse in a variety of media. The lot offered here is one of a series of Wounded Horse drawings in gouache and charcoal created by Frink during the late 1980s and perhaps part of a solo exhibition on the artist held at Galerie Simonne Stern in New Orleans in 1991. The series began after a horse kept by the artist and her husband at their home was injured, and it led to her considering ideas for her monumental War Horse sculpture. These drawings reflect the development of Frink’s interest in color and rhythmic marks in her three-dimensional work. As Annette Ratuszniak writes: “Drawing was central to the way that Frink explored her feelings about human aggression, vulnerability and the impact we have on the world we share with other species. Her drawings are related to but never studies for a particular sculpture, unless for a commission.” Neal Auction Company would like to thank Annette Ratuszniak, former Curator of the Elisabeth Frink Estate and Archive, and the Frink Archive at the Dorset History Centre for their assistance with the cataloguing and research of this lot.
