John R. Wendt "Medallion" Sterling Silver Coffee and Tea Service , c. 1860, comprised of coffee pot (h. 10 1/2 in.), teapot, covered sugar and creamer, each cover with Spartan helmet finial, pyriform body with oval medallion framed by Neo-Grec chasing, period monogram (rubbed) on reverse, and beaded handle surmounted by Renaissance bust, total wt. 91.05 troy ozs.; together with good English silverplate tea tray, I. Freeman & Son, Sheffield, 20th c., 28 1/2 in. x 18 3/4 in Provenance: Collection of Dr. Mark A. Geist, Providence, RI. Note: John R. Wendt is thought to be the originator of the die-stamped "Medallion" pattern flatware. The 1862 US design patent 1580 was issued in his name. The Wendt flatware features variations in the Medallion portraits, as seen in the tea service. John R. Wendt & Co. was active in New York City from 1855-1870
