Swiss School, early 19th century- Cycle of the life of Guillaume Tell; aquatints, four plates from a suite of twelve (thought to be), ea. 21x31cm. (mounted, unframed) Note: These engravings depict scenes from the life of the legendary Swiss figure Guillaume Tell. They exhibit a stylistic similarity to the engraving by Carl Guttenberg (1743-1792) of Tell leaping from a boat to escape his enemies, including Gessner, which is itself after Henry Fuseli (1741-1825). The composition of this scene, called the Tellensprung, in these plates also resembles that produced by the Swiss artist Ernst Stuckelberg (1831-1903) for a set of frescoes in the Tellskapelle, the chapel which allegedly marked the spot where Tell leapt to safety from the boat.
