Circle of Alphonse Etienne Dinet, French 1861-1929- Astyanax Effraye par son pere Hector; oil on canvas, bears inscription on the stretcher, signed indistinctly, 40x30cm Provenance: The collection of the artist Charles James Theriat (1860-1937); Christie's sale, South Kensington Note: This work may have been painted in Grez, where Theriat was working in the 1880s along with the other American artists Walter Gay (1856-1937) and Willard Lowell Metcalf (1858-1925). This work recalls the work of the nineteenth-century French Orientalist School of painting, of which Alphonse Etienne Dinet was a central figure. Dinet studied under Tony Robert-Fleury and William Bouguereau, both influential art teachers with an interest in depicting dramatic classical and historical scenes. In 1887 he co-founded the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Fran?ais with Léonce Bénédite, the director of the Musée de Luxembourg. Other founding members of this group included key Orientalist artists such as Paul Leroy, Eugene Girardet, and Maurice Bompard. He also established the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1889 with a number of significant contemporary artists, including Charles Cottet, Rodin, Carolus-Duran, Puvis de Chavannes, and Meissonier.
