Antoine Bouvard, French 1870-1956- Grand Canal, Venice; oil on canvas, signed, 24.5x33cm (ARR) (Vat charged on hammer price) Note: Bouvard frequented Venice during the 1920’s and 1930’s, returning to Paris to sell his work. A recluse, he had little contact with the public, selling his views through art dealers. He painted exclusively Venetian views, having clearly identified a market in which he was to achieve considerable commercial success. Bouvard also worked under the pseudonym of Marc Aldine, allowing him further success through alternative markets for his work. Held in a gilded composition Charles X style frame, mid-late 20th century Frame with damage to front edge lower left. Frame bears inscribed brass tablet Grand Canal Venice A. Bouvard. The canvas has not been relined. On the original wooden stretcher with single vertical cross brace and intact wedges. Stretcher bears pencil inscription Grand Canal. Small patches of flaking to top right near the dome and along top right corner Slight ruckling to the canvas upper left in sky. Small amount of marks from rubbing of the frame very top right edge. Under inspection with UV lamp there is no evidence of retouching or restoration. Overall in good original condition, will require a small amount of restoration.
