A 19th century Russian silver and niello tobacco box, Moscow, c.1850, assay master Andrei Kovalsky, with maker's mark VE (Cyrillic) and 84 zolotniki mark, the lid, sides and base of the box all designed with niello foliate scroll decoration, the hinged lid with thumbpiece opening to reveal presentation engraving to gilded interior reading 'To Thomas T Wingett Esq. M.D. as a mark of gratitude & respect', dimensions 7.7 x 4.1cm, gross weight 3.1oz Note: From the presentation engraving, it is possible that this box may have belonged to Thomas T. Wingett M..D, Medical Superintendent at the Dundee Royal Lunatic Asylum as described in the Dundee Directory of 1856-57 Please refer to department for condition report Foliate box: maker described by Platonova/Ulyanova as 'unknown maker of tobacco boxes c.1846'
